Atletico Madrid has identified former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah as its primary transfer target to reinforce the attack following Antoine Griezmann's impending departure.

The Spanish club is preparing a contract proposal for the 33-year-old Egyptian, who became a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with Liverpool on June 30.

Griezmann, Atletico's all-time leading scorer with 212 goals, is scheduled to join Major League Soccer side Orlando City on July 13.

This leaves manager Diego Simeone in need of a high-profile replacement.

Salah's Current Situation

Salah is currently representing Egypt at the FIFA World Cup, playing against Argentina.

In his final season at Anfield, he recorded 12 goals and 10 assists, despite a perceived decline in overall performance.

Atletico faces stiff competition for Salah's signature.

The winger has received lucrative financial offers from clubs in the Saudi Pro League and the United States.

The Spanish club has a history of successfully signing veteran forwards over 30, including David Villa in 2013 and Luis Suarez in 2020.

Both signings helped Atletico win LaLiga in their respective seasons.

No formal negotiations have been finalized yet.
