Potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate Rahm Emanuel arrived in Tel Aviv to deliver a blunt warning: unconditional U.

S. support for Israel must end unless the country changes its current strategic direction.

The former Chicago mayor and White House chief of staff scheduled a speech at Tel Aviv University on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, to address Israel's growing diplomatic isolation amid its ongoing military campaign in Gaza.

Emanuel plans to argue that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has led Israel into a dead end by treating every security problem solely with military action.

"It should be obvious that strategic isolation is not a foundation for security," said Emanuel. "It's a countdown clock."

He emphasized that the historical alliance between the two nations faces unprecedented strain due to recent policy decisions.

"It cannot stand or survive as it has been," said Emanuel. "To maintain the strength of our ties, we need significant changes and a new direction."

In an interview prior to the event, Emanuel criticized Israel's restrictions on humanitarian aid and its handling of civilian lives during the conflict.

"Reckless and careless in the treatment of Palestinian life — not only the military campaign but using food and medicine as an instrument of your military goals," said Emanuel.

When questioned about international accusations regarding the nature of the conflict, he stated that the situation should be analyzed alongside other global wars.

"I'm ready to have that discussion," said Emanuel, "but I don't think it should be politicized, and then dilute the power of what genocide means."
