S&P 500 futures dipped while Dow contracts edged higher on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, as rising crude oil prices and persistent interest rate anxieties pressured global equity markets following a broad tech sell-off.

Market jitters intensified after a reported attack on a Qatari liquefied natural gas vessel in the Strait of Hormuz drove international crude prices higher, escalating concerns about global inflation and energy supply disruptions.

Global Sell-Off Spreads

The global downturn began on Tuesday, July 7, when Asian markets tumbled due to stretched valuations in artificial intelligence and semiconductor shares, dragging down major tech firms like Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology, and Nvidia.

The selling pressure quickly spread into European and Indian markets as investors adjusted growth expectations for high-growth sectors sensitive to elevated borrowing costs.

"Indian equities ended marginally lower, snapping a four-session winning streak, as weak cues from Asian markets and a renewed attack on an oil vessel in the Strait of Hormuz dampened investor sentiment," said R Ponmudi, CEO, Enrich Money.

The domestic market saw varied movements across different industries as traders reacted to the international regional pressures.

"Sectoral performance remained mixed, with IT emerging as the top performer, gaining more than 2.3%, while real estate, metals, and defence stocks witnessed broad-based selling pressure," said R Ponmudi, CEO, Enrich Money.

In individual corporate movements on Wednesday, Cloudflare shares jumped 8.60% following an analyst upgrade, while Rivian Automotive plunged 18.12% after finalizing a 1.16 billion dollar equity offering.
