Millwall has completed the signing of Republic of Ireland international midfielder Mark Sykes on a two-year contract, the club announced Thursday.

The 28-year-old joined as a free agent after his contract with Championship rivals Bristol City expired earlier this summer.

Sykes chose a move to The Den under manager Alex Neil, despite reported interest from other second-tier clubs including Preston North End and Charlton Athletic.

He becomes the fourth summer addition for the Lions, alongside Tairyk Arconte, Jenson Matcalfe, and Mathis Servais. Midfielder Barry Bannan has left the club to rejoin Sheffield Wednesday.

During his four-year stint with Bristol City, Sykes made 153 appearances and scored 18 goals across all competitions after joining from Oxford United in 2022.

He has earned seven senior caps for Ireland.

Sykes is set for an immediate return to Ashton Gate when Millwall faces Bristol City on the opening weekend of the Championship season.

Versatility praised

Steve Gallen, Millwall's director of football, highlighted the player's adaptability.

"Mark is a proven, experienced Championship player with senior international caps to his name and he brings genuine versatility to our squad," Gallen said.

"He can operate at right-back, right-wing or the right side of the midfield, and having that kind of flexibility in one player is a real asset for us," Gallen added.

Gallen also noted Sykes' technical qualities.

"He's mobile, comfortable on the ball and reads the game well - we're really pleased to have him on board."

Millwall enters the new season under Neil after a play-off semi-final defeat against Hull City last year.
