Newcastle United has finalized the acquisition of teenage midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for a total fee of £23 million, the club announced on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

The English club will pay an initial £20 million plus £3 million in performance-related bonuses to secure the 18-year-old Netherlands youth international on a five-year contract.

According to Sky Sports News, the transfer follows a disagreement between Ajax and Steur regarding his first-team playing time in Amsterdam next season, which led to the player being demoted to their Under-21 squad.

The central midfielder came through the RKAV Volendam and Ajax youth systems, earning the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy as Ajax's top academy talent before making 25 senior appearances and playing in the Champions League last season.

Steur becomes the third summer arrival for Newcastle under head coach Eddie Howe, following the signings of winger Bazoumana Toure and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, which helped offset the high-profile departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.

Player and Manager Reactions

"It's an incredible feeling to be here.

It's a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world, so this is really exciting," Steur said.

The young player expressed gratitude for his developmental years in the Netherlands while acknowledging the significance of the Premier League opportunity.

"I was at home at Ajax - I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories, but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it's really hard to say no.
