Violent protests and political clashes have erupted in West Bengal, India, following a series of violent incidents this week.

The unrest began after the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl, whose body was found in a pond outside Kolkata.

An autopsy revealed the girl suffered a severe head blow and multiple injuries before being placed in a sack while alive.

In response, an angry mob killed a 26-year-old man mistakenly believed to be responsible. Police later confirmed the lynched individual was not connected to the crime.

Tensions escalated further on Tuesday when police shot and killed the primary suspect, Pravash Mondal.

Officials said Mondal was shot while attempting to seize a police firearm and escape custody.

Opposition groups criticized the shooting, labeling it an "encounter killing" and raising concerns about the rule of law.

The political fallout intensified as opponents accused the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party government of failing to protect citizens.

Clashes broke out between workers of the ruling party and the opposition Trinamool Congress party.

Family members of the victim claimed local police initially neglected the case, forcing relatives to conduct their own search.

Authorities have not yet responded to these allegations.

In response to spreading unrest and vandalism, officials imposed a strict ban on public gatherings and deployed paramilitary forces in sensitive areas.

Newly elected Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Mondal's family on Tuesday and stated the government remains committed to preventing such incidents.

However, critics accused Adhikari of attempting to communalize the violence along religious lines. The young victim was Muslim, while the alleged attackers who reportedly confessed are Hindu.

The innocent man killed by the mob was also Hindu.

Adhikari suggested the mob attack involved a "communal connection" and a broader "political conspiracy." Following the lynching and subsequent riots, police have arrested more than 30 individuals.
