Senate seat left vacant by her late brother, Lindsey Graham, who passed away on Saturday night at age 71.

The appointment allows the 62-year-old Nordone to complete the remainder of the Republican senator's term, which runs until January 3, 2026.

Upon being sworn in on Tuesday, she will become the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate.

Personal Connection Highlighted

"Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed," said McMaster during a press conference at the state capital in Columbia.

He emphasized the deeply personal connection between the siblings before formally offering her the caretaker role.

"It's my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now," McMaster added.

Accepting the appointment while surrounded by family and friends, Nordone reflected on her late brother's lifelong support and her commitment to honoring his legacy.

"And now I will be there for him," she stated.

The appointment follows a long-standing American political tradition known as "widow's succession," where family members temporarily fill vacant congressional seats until a successor is officially elected.

Former President Donald Trump had publicly urged McMaster to select Nordone prior to the official announcement. "This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!"
