The next-generation BMW M3 has entered a new development phase, with prototypes now lapping the Nürburgring. The high-performance sedan is expected to arrive in 2028.

Under the hood, the new M3 will retain a familiar twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine.

BMW M CEO Frank Van Meel confirmed the car will use an updated version of this powerplant, featuring BMW M Ignite technology for cleaner and more efficient combustion to meet Euro 7 standards.

The upgraded engine debuts in the current M3 and M4 this month, before reaching the M2 in August.

Output levels are expected to carry over at 473 hp, 503 hp, and 523 hp. A new mild-hybrid system will be added to improve both performance and efficiency.

Design-wise, the next M3 adopts an edgier look inspired by the electric M Neue Klasse concept.

The front bumper and intakes are revised, and the car appears to do without a traditional grille despite being ICE-powered.

Extended wheel arches hint at a wider track, and the prototype wears staggered wheels with 19-inch front and 20-inch rear rims.

Flush-mounted door handles and a beefy braking system with bronze calipers are visible. The greenhouse and roofline echo the new i3.

At the rear, a quad-tailpipe exhaust and a small spoiler remain, joined by a new trunk lid and temporary taillights.

Inside, the cabin is expected to feature Panoramic iDrive, including a pillar-to-pillar display at the base of the windshield, a 17.9-inch infotainment screen, and possibly a 14.6-inch front passenger display.
