British runner Josh Kerr made history at the London Diamond League by breaking the men's one-mile world record.

The former 1500m world champion crossed the finish line in 3 minutes 42.66 seconds, surpassing the previous mark of 3:43.13 set by Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999.

A Race to Remember

Kerr stayed behind two pacemakers for most of the race.

The pace was slightly below world-record speed until the pacemakers left the track with 600 meters to go.

Once they stepped aside, Kerr accelerated dramatically. American runner Yared Nuguse could not keep up as Kerr charged toward the finish.

The capacity crowd at London Stadium erupted in celebration as Kerr secured his victory.

The moment marked the culmination of a meticulously planned project that Kerr had focused on for months.

Kerr had been writing "I ran 3:42 at the London Diamond League. July 18th, 2026" in his notebook daily.

He even matched the duration of his ice bath recovery sessions to his targeted record time.

Advanced racing technology supported his performance. Kerr used custom spikes and a specialized aerodynamic racing kit from his sponsor, Brooks.

With this achievement, Kerr becomes the seventh British man to hold the one-mile world record, joining legends like Roger Bannister, Seb Coe, and Steve Ovett.
