A judge sentenced Richard Stevens to two years in prison, plus time already served, after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2024 death of Daniel Sanvido in Port Colborne.
Stevens originally faced a first-degree murder charge before entering the guilty plea to the lesser charge in a St. Catharines courtroom on Friday.

Judge's Remarks on Sentencing
During the hearing, Judge Cameron Watson addressed the victim's family, noting the limitations of the criminal justice system.
"The criminal justice system is at best an exceptionally blunt instrument which requires sentences to be meted out in terms of hours, weeks, days, years with other ancillary orders, but the criminal justice system doesn’t truly deal with what we are effectively dealing with here today," Watson said.

The case is part of a broader legal process involving multiple individuals connected to the homicide in the Niagara Region.

A second person has already received a four-year sentence for manslaughter related to Sanvido's death. A third case remains pending before the courts.
