“By the time I was three, I was enjoying math puzzles,” he said.

“My grandfather was a physicist and my mother taught math, so I had a lot of support and resources growing up, along with plenty of puzzles to solve.

And that’s what mathematics is, basically: puzzles.”

Addressing his work process, Tsimerman noted that solutions often come after long periods of study.

“I might be at a bar taking a shot and something will occur to me — but it's not because I'm Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting,” he said.

“It's because I've been thinking about it for months or years and that just happened to be when I figured it out.”

He also jokingly referenced superhero powers when asked about his problem-solving approach.

“I wish I had Spider-Man's powers,” he said.

Highlighting the necessity of partnership in mathematical research, Tsimerman shared his experience with working independently.

“When I work alone, I start to suspect I’m crazy or that everything I’m doing is wrong,” he said.

Colleagues and academic leaders praised Tsimerman's contributions to number theory and the global academic standing of the institution.

“The methods used to approach it cover, I would say, the whole of mathematics,” said Andrei Yafaev, a professor at University College London.

Korean research institutions also praised his recent work on Shimura varieties, pointing out its broad impact across the discipline.

“While his work on Shimura varieties is the most well-known, he has produced results in other fields that are effectively worthy of a Fields Medal on their own,” said Kim Wan-soo, a professor at KAIST.
