OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has predicted that artificial intelligence will eventually run his company better than he can.
He made the statement at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi in February 2026.

Altman said early versions of AI superintelligence could emerge within a few years on OpenAI's current path. He has expressed openness to being replaced by AI.
In November 2025, on the "Conversations with Tyler" podcast, Altman said he would be ashamed if OpenAI is not the first major company run by an AI CEO.
He posed a thought experiment about what it would take for AI to outperform him as CEO.
In a July 2026 interview, Altman estimated that a single OpenAI division could be 85% operated by AI within a few years.
However, he noted challenges in fully replacing the CEO role due to its public-facing nature.
He also forecasted the rise of "billion-dollar companies run by two or three people with AI." Altman acknowledged that human trust in people over AI will slow adoption.
Altman's broadest prediction came in February 2026 when he said that by the end of 2028, more of the world's intellectual capacity might be housed in data centers than outside them.

He described this as inevitable technological progress, not dystopian.
Altman expressed confidence in human creativity and competition driving future progress. His views reflect wider industry concerns about AI's impact on white-collar jobs.
Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman warned in February 2026 that AI could automate white-collar work within 12 to 18 months.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted in May 2025 that AI might eliminate 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs.
Both have since softened these forecasts, focusing on AI augmenting rather than replacing workers.
Altman's personal readiness to be displaced by AI stands out.
He has adjusted OpenAI's hiring strategy to favor candidates who seriously consider how AI will reshape work in the next few years.
