Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris has firmly closed the door on a potential transfer of midfielder Granit Xhaka to Chelsea, asserting the Swiss international's commitment to the club.
Le Bris emphasized the situation is settled and that Xhaka has expressed a strong desire to remain at Sunderland, where he plays a key leadership role.
"No, this topic is closed," Le Bris said. "He has been very clear about his future.
He loves Sunderland and he wants to stay. He wants to build its future.
He is a good and great leader."
Earlier reports revealed Sunderland rejected a reported £8 million bid from Chelsea for the 33-year-old midfielder, a sum the club deemed insufficient.
Xhaka, who made 36 appearances last season, contributed one goal and six assists.
His performances helped Sunderland secure a seventh-place finish in the Premier League, earning Europa League qualification.
"Granit has been really clear about his future, he loves Sunderland, he wants to stay in Sunderland, he wants to make the future of Sunderland," Le Bris reiterated in an interview.
"He's a good captain, a great leader."
Signed through 2028, Xhaka's contract provides Sunderland no immediate need to sell the midfielder, who remains an integral part of the team's plans.
The Swiss international is known for his defensive skills, tackling ability, and accurate passing. He often contributes powerful long-range shots and creates opportunities for teammates.
While primarily a defensive midfielder, Xhaka can also perform as a box-to-box player when required, bringing a wealth of top-level experience to Sunderland's squad.
At 33, Xhaka is considered past his prime but continues to provide vital leadership expected to help Sunderland in the upcoming Premier League campaign.
