Water levels at Lake Powell and Lake Mead fell to historic lows in July 2026, creating an unprecedented supply crisis for 40 million people across seven Southwestern states that rely on the Colorado River basin.
Data published by water experts showed Lake Powell dropped to 3,524 feet, while Lake Mead measured under 1,043 feet on July 12.

Their combined capacity reached its lowest point since May 1957, during the initial construction of the Glen Canyon Dam.
Hotter spring temperatures, severe drought, and record low snowpack in the Upper Basin states triggered rapid declines of 15,000 to 16,000 acre-feet daily across the two reservoirs over recent months.
Experts Warn of Imbalance and System Risk
Jack Schmidt, director of the Center for Colorado River Studies at Utah State University and lead author of the analysis, called the low storage "a milestone in the history of water storage in the Colorado River Basin."
Schmidt noted that the depletion points to a severe imbalance in managed water usage.
"There's less water in the two reservoirs than there has ever been at any time in the history of Lake Powell even existing," he said.
He warned that current management strategies fall short of correcting systemic overconsumption.
"It is a reminder that we are significantly failing in our ability to control and reduce our basin-wide consumptive use," Schmidt added.
Addressing recovery, Schmidt compared the basin to a bathtub: "The amount of water we have left in the bathtub can be fixed by increasing flow out of the faucet or closing down the drain.
