Political and corporate figures across Scotland expressed grief on July 27, 2026, following the passing of industrialist Sir Ian Wood.
He died peacefully at his home as announced by his family.

First Minister Leads Tributes
First Minister John Swinney issued a statement highlighting the industrialist's deep influence on the nation's economic framework and energy capabilities.
"I am deeply saddened by the death of Sir Ian Wood.
Through business, philanthropy and his deep commitment to Aberdeen and the North East, he helped shape Scotland’s economy and improve countless lives," Swinney said.
Swinney further emphasized Wood's role in building a global enterprise from local roots in Aberdeenshire.
"Sir Ian Wood stands as one of Scotland’s most influential business leaders and philanthropists, a figure whose vision, determination and generosity have left a lasting mark on the nation and far beyond," he added.
The First Minister praised the strategic impact of Wood's corporate leadership over several decades.
"Through his leadership of Wood Group, he helped transform a modest family business into a global energy services company, playing a pivotal role in the growth of the North Sea oil and gas industry, and establishing Scotland as a world-renowned centre of energy expertise," Swinney said.
Expressing personal condolences, Swinney noted the lasting changes brought by Wood's charitable undertakings. "Sir Ian Wood’s legacy is one of enterprise, leadership and generosity," he said.
