The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has placed Michael Lombardi, general manager of the UNC football program, on paid administrative leave effective immediately, the school announced Monday.
The university did not disclose the reason for Lombardi's leave and instructed leadership, staff, and student-athletes not to discuss the matter further, stating it reflects "no reflection on the merits."

Background and Role
Lombardi, known for his decades-long NFL career, joined UNC in December 2024 alongside head coach Bill Belichick.
He was hired to lead roster assembly for the football team and was reportedly the highest-paid general manager in college football, earning about $1.5 million annually under a three-year contract ending January 2028.
Before UNC, Lombardi held executive roles with NFL teams including the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, and Denver Broncos.
He was part of three Super Bowl-winning organizations and had previous working ties with Belichick in New England.
"Working with Coach Belichick has always been one of the most rewarding times of my life," Lombardi said when hired.

Belichick praised Lombardi's expertise in building championship-caliber teams, stating, "Michael knows how to build a champion and brings a great deal of quality experience to the UNC program.
I am excited to be reunited with Michael, and we will rely on his expertise in evaluating and acquiring talent for the Tar Heel program."
Recent Performance and Next Steps
Lombardi’s first season as GM saw the Tar Heels finish 4-8 overall, with only two ACC wins.
His administrative leave comes just weeks before the start of the 2026 season and amid ongoing preseason preparations.

The university has not indicated if a replacement GM will be named or provided further details about the personnel move, maintaining that the leave should not be interpreted as a reflection on Lombardi's work.
