A steep decline in Tesla Cybertruck sales has prompted automotive analysts and industry reports to characterize the electric vehicle as a major commercial disappointment, drawing comparisons to historical automotive missteps like the Ford Edsel.
According to a Bloomberg report published on July 22, 2026, the Cybertruck is failing to meet its target-versus-actual sales projections.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously projected annual sales targets of 250,000 to 500,000 units, calling the pickup Tesla's best product ever.
Registration and delivery figures indicate a sharp downward trajectory for the model.
Data from Cox Automotive showed Cybertruck sales fell from 38,965 units in 2024 to 20,237 units in 2025, representing a 48.1% year-over-year drop.
Volume in the fourth quarter of 2025 dropped to 4,140 units, down 68.1% from 12,991 units during the same period a year earlier.
According to S&P Global Mobility data cited by Bloomberg, only 7,133 Cybertrucks were registered in the U.
S. through May 2026, with first-quarter deliveries reaching a record low of 3,519 units.
The sales slump coincides with broader financial pressure on Tesla, which reported a 14% single-session stock drop following its Q2 earnings report.
Although total revenue rose 25.52% year-over-year to $28.24 billion on record vehicle deliveries of 480,126 units, operating income slid 56.88% to $398 million, and adjusted earnings per share missed consensus estimates.
The commercial performance has drawn comparisons to the 1957 Ford Edsel, which sold less than a third of its 200,000 first-year target before being discontinued two years later.
