Volvo has taken a step toward expanding its electric vehicle lineup by filing a trademark application for the EX50 name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on July 14, 2026.
The filing indicates the Swedish automaker is preparing a new battery-powered SUV that will likely sit between the existing EX40 and EX60 models in its portfolio.

nl, the EX50 designation points to an upcoming model that could serve as a direct successor to the EX40, which has been on the market for nearly a decade.
Volvo has not officially confirmed the vehicle, but the company revealed during its second-quarter earnings report that it plans to unveil two new electric models before the end of summer.
Industry observers note that the July patent filing might indicate a later arrival for the EX50, with potential US showroom availability projected for 2028.
Platform and Performance
A source familiar with Volvo's product plans indicated the upcoming electric vehicles will utilize the brand's advanced SPA3 platform, the same architecture underpinning the 2027 EX60.
The SPA3 platform features an 800-volt electrical system and a cell-to-body battery design, enabling faster charging, extended range, and maximized interior space.

The EX60 sets a high benchmark with an EPA-estimated range of up to 530 kilometers and a WLTP rating of 810 kilometers.
Its P10 AWD variant can add 265 kilometers of range in ten minutes at a peak charging power of 370 kW.
The EX60 measures 480.3 cm in length, 206.8 cm in width, and 163.6 cm in height, with a 297 cm wheelbase, placing it in the same class as the Tesla Model Y.
The upcoming EX50 is expected to feature slightly smaller dimensions and a lower entry price than the EX60, which starts at $58,400 in the US.
Market estimates project the EX50's starting price around $50,000.
