Chelsea is working to sign veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford on a free transfer on Monday, July 27, 2026, as new manager Xabi Alonso seeks experienced leadership for the upcoming Premier League season.

The Stamford Bridge club leads the race for the 36-year-old England international, who is open to the move.

According to reports from Fabrizio Romano and Yahoo Sports, Brentford is willing to sanction an amicable release despite Henderson having one year left on his contract.

This pursuit marks a dramatic shift in Chelsea's recent recruitment strategy, which heavily favored youth.

The club has also explored signing Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, 35, and Manchester City defender John Stones, 32, after Sunderland rejected an £8 million bid for 33-year-old Granit Xhaka.

Henderson's Recent Career

Henderson made 34 appearances for Brentford last season following his return from Ajax and a brief stint at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq.

He is best known for his 12-year tenure at Liverpool, where he made 492 appearances and captained the team to Premier League and Champions League titles.

The midfielder was recently included in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, where the team finished third.

However, his tournament was disrupted when he suffered a broken left arm after tripping over an advertising board during the round-of-16 victory against Mexico.

Brentford head coach Keith Andrews previously highlighted the midfielder's immense impact when he originally arrived at the club, calling him "one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years."
