Dutch police have identified human remains found on the island of Texel in October 2023 as belonging to two Afghan refugees, aged 20 and 27.

The remains were discovered by a beachcomber along the western coastline, with a shoe containing a foot later found near De Koog.

Due to severe decomposition, the remains were initially buried in an anonymous grave after international DNA searches failed.

A damaged mobile phone with a French SIM card found in a pocket suggested the victims were migrants attempting to cross the English Channel.

Personal belongings such as backpacks and life jackets from migrant crossings frequently wash up on North Holland beaches due to currents.

Police contacted aid organizations, leading to DNA samples from family members in Afghanistan, which confirmed the identities last month.

Relatives were notified through Red Cross personnel.

“Every day was grief and sorrow,” said a family member, as reported by regional broadcaster NH.

“Now that we know this and have certainty, there is grief and relief at the same time.”

Police spokesperson Erwin Sintenie said the investigation was exceptional in scope, involving digital forensics and international coordination.

“The message is not good, but we are happy and proud that we can give clarity to those left behind,” Sintenie said.

He emphasized the psychological burden on families during prolonged missing person cases.

“We know what it does to people when it is unclear what the fate of their loved one is.

We are glad that we were able to spare these people that and offer certainty.”

The investigation focused solely on identification; the cause of death and how the bodies drifted to Texel remain outside the inquiry's scope.
