A cold front sweeping south across Georgia on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, pushed out severe heat and tropical moisture, triggering scattered storms before bringing lower humidity and milder midweek temperatures.
The front followed days of intense heat advisories, with heat index values reaching up to 109 degrees.

Flash flood warnings briefly grounded flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport due to heavy rain and tropical storm activity in the Gulf.
The storm line brought severe risks including frequent lightning, localized downpours, quarter-sized hail, and wind gusts up to 60 mph across northern and central Georgia counties.
Storm Development and Rapid Clearing
Meteorologists with the FOX 5 Storm Team noted that local atmospheric conditions were prime for intense weather developments right before the front passed.
“We have plenty of moisture resting over the area; we just need a trigger, and that trigger comes by way of that front passing over the Appalachians,” they explained during Tuesday evening's broadcast.
The weather system clears rapidly overnight, paving the way for lower humidity and seasonable late-week weather.
“By the time we get into the wee hours of Wednesday morning, that stuff is out of here, working wonders for us with highs right on the money in the upper 80s to around 90,” meteorologists added.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan indicated that the broader region will see reduced precipitation risks following the front's departure.
“For the rest of the week, other than the chance for some evening and early morning rain, there will not be a whole lot,” Monahan said.
Forecasts from the National Weather Service highlight the lingering impact of heat illness risks preceding the cooler air mass.
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” the NWS forecast says.
High temperatures across metro Atlanta will hover around 90 degrees through Friday under mostly sunny skies, while mountain communities experience overnight lows in the upper 50s.
