Chris was initially diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2025 and given six months to live, as reported in an obituary published by her family in The Boston Globe.
Before her passing, she fulfilled a personal wish to attend her grandson's high school graduation ceremony alongside family members on May 31, just two days before she died peacefully in her sleep.

Family and Legacy
Her family confirmed her death publicly on July 24, noting that her five grandchildren served as the primary focus of her final two decades.
A Harvard graduate, Chris spent nearly four decades working in public education, teaching elementary students and leading literacy programs in Cambridge, Massachusetts, while raising her sons as a single mother following her separation from Timothy Affleck.
Beyond her educational career, she maintained a long history of civil rights activism, including teaching literacy during Mississippi's Freedom Summer, advocating for water justice in Palestine, and helping found the environmental non-profit Sustainable Cape.
