A searchable online property database released by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration has drawn sharp criticism from homeowners, real estate groups, and public officials who warn it creates privacy risks and confusion over property tax surcharges.

Published on July 24, 2026, by the New York City Department of Finance, the public rolls contain roughly 960,000 property records across all five boroughs.

The database aims to identify non-primary residences subject to the city's new pied-à-terre tax surcharge, which targets luxury secondary homes to fund municipal services.

While Mayor Mamdani initially promoted the tax as targeting non-primary residences valued at over $5 million, the searchable roll includes properties valued at $1 million or more.

The database covers one- to three-family homes, co-ops, condos, and mixed-use spaces, prompting warnings that middle-class residents and primary homeowners are being caught in the net.

Tax Surcharge and Exemption Deadlines

Property owners whose non-primary residences qualify face potential annual surcharges ranging from 0.8 percent to 6.5 percent.

Owners of single-family homes and condos have until August 21 to apply for an exemption, while cooperative-apartment owners have until August 24 before formal tax bills are issued in November.

Longtime Park Slope resident Marvin Ciporen, who lives in a four-story Brooklyn home valued by the city at $5.2 million, reported receiving a notice threatening a $41,000 tax increase unless he proves his residency.
