A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck about five miles southeast of Cloverdale in Northern Sonoma County, California, on the evening of July 28 at 7:40 p.

The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 3.4 miles and was followed by a magnitude 2.5 aftershock less than a minute later near the same location at a depth of 2.6 miles.
The USGS noted the epicenter was close to The Geysers geothermal area, a region known for frequent seismic activity.
State Senator Mike McGuire, representing northern Sonoma County, described it as a "good-sized shaker."
"No early reports of damage or injuries," McGuire wrote on Facebook.
Residents near Cloverdale reported light shaking, while very light shaking was felt as far north as Ukiah, according to the USGS's "Did You Feel It?"

The quake caused light to moderate shaking but was not expected to cause significant damage, the USGS said.
Additional aftershocks were reported in the area following the initial quake, with no major damage or injuries confirmed.
The earthquake is part of ongoing seismic activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a 25,000-mile zone of frequent volcanic and earthquake activity surrounding the Pacific Ocean.
Earlier the same day, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Japan, causing fires and structural damage.

Previous smaller quakes were recorded in Northern California this year, including a magnitude 4.2 in January and a 3.7 in June.
