Emergency crews across France, Spain, Greece, and Turkey are battling rampant wildfires sparked by high temperatures, severe drought, and strong winds.

Thousands of residents and tourists have been forced to evacuate threatened communities.

France: Evacuations in Var and Bordeaux

In France, new fires broke out in the Var department, forcing the evacuation of up to 700 people in Brignoles as 100 hectares burned.

Additional blazes were reported near Fontainebleau and in Couchey, where smoke prompted safety advisories.

Crews in Bordeaux fought rekindled hotspots in 41-degree Celsius heat.

Sophie Brocas, the prefect of Bordeaux, said she hopes "to be able to consider a return to normality for residents and businesses that need to carry out their work."

Spain: Major Blaze in Ávila

Firefighters in Spain face three new blazes in León province, which forced around 300 residents from San Cipriano into temporary shelters.

Another blaze in Zamora near Portugal evacuated 1,000 people.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez scheduled a visit to Ávila province, where a major wildfire burned 50,000 hectares after a hydraulic hammer ignited dry brush.

Greece: Fatalities in Crete

In Greece, a severe wildfire on the southern coast of Crete remains out of control, with high winds preventing aerial operations and leading to three firefighter fatalities.

Authorities evacuated 8,000 people from the coastal town of Agia Galini.

Fires on Lesbos and eastern Crete have been contained.

Turkish firefighters also contained several blazes in Antalya and western provinces after flames threatened residential areas.
