Four migrants died during attempts to cross the English Channel from northern France on July 30, 2026, amid a surge in small boat departures.
French maritime authorities reported separate incidents overnight off Hardelot and Dunkirk following a period of favorable weather conditions.

Incidents Off Hardelot and Dunkirk
The tragedy began around 11:30 p. m.
local time on Wednesday off Hardelot beach when an overcrowded dinghy capsized.
A man in his thirties or forties died, while six other passengers, including a one-year-old child, sustained minor injuries and required hospitalization.
Hours later at approximately 6:00 a. m.
on Thursday, search crews spotted a second small boat near the Braek breakwater off Dunkirk.
Emergency responders discovered three unresponsive individuals on board, who were declared dead after being brought ashore by rescue personnel.
Surge in Crossing Attempts
The fatalities coincided with an uptick in crossing attempts, with around 700 migrants reaching or attempting to reach the United Kingdom on Wednesday as warm weather created calm sea conditions.
French emergency services also airlifted another individual suffering from severe burns to a medical center during the operations.

Official statistics show that 12,469 migrants crossed the English Channel via small boats between January 1 and July 13, 2026, marking a 45 percent decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.
The Home Office recorded that average vessel occupancy rose to 66 people per boat between July 2025 and July 2026.
