Ten mountaineers, including American Mallory Geis, remain missing after an avalanche struck their expedition team on Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram range, officials reported late Thursday.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan received initial reports that the avalanche hit the climbing team led by high-altitude mountaineer Nirmal Purja, cutting off all communications with the group.
The missing expedition includes five Nepalese climbers, Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi of Hunza, Omani climber Nathira, American climber Mallory Geis, a Chinese climber identified as Wang, and another foreign national.
Rescue Efforts and Coordination
The club's president, Maj. Gen.
Irfan Arshad, alongside senior leaders, maintains active contact with government officials to facilitate an immediate search-and-rescue operation.
Officials stated that rapid mobilization of rescue helicopters and resources is underway, subject to severe high-altitude weather and operational constraints.
"The Alpine Club of Pakistan is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with all concerned stakeholders," said Alpine Club of Pakistan Vice President Karrar Haidri.
The organization expressed solidarity with the families of the missing climbers and the international mountaineering community as search efforts continue.
