New York City kicked off its annual Summer Streets program on Saturday, August 1, 2026, opening miles of Manhattan roadways to pedestrians, cyclists, and runners.
The event marks the first of three consecutive car-free weekends in the borough, with closures from the Brooklyn Bridge up to Inwood between 7 a.

Free Activities and Route Details
Participants can enjoy free outdoor fitness classes and cultural performances along the designated route.
Following the opening weekend, Manhattan will host additional sessions on August 8 and August 15 before the program moves to Brooklyn and the Bronx on August 22.
Transportation officials have set up extensive vehicle detours and parking restrictions from midnight until 4 p. m.
, while MTA buses operate on modified routes throughout the borough.

Traffic entering Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge is diverted to the FDR Drive or Park Row South exits, but all Brooklyn-bound bridge access points remain open.
The NYC Department of Transportation also introduced an interactive promotion featuring official championship parade sign replicas from the New York Knicks.
Participants can enter a raffle by sharing photos at designated truck locations along the route.
“Summer Streets is a celebration of the season and how we can bring public space alive to benefit all New Yorkers,” said Mike Flynn, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Transportation.
“More than 500,000 people participate in Summer Streets each year,” he added.

The annual initiative previously opened streets across Queens and Staten Island, encouraging non-motorized recreation and community engagement across all five boroughs during the summer months.
