The San Antonio Spurs forced a decisive Game 7 in the Western Conference Finals by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in a Game 6 blowout on Thursday night, May 28, 2026, in San Antonio, tying the series at 3-3.
San Antonio bounced back from a 127-114 loss in Game 5, where Victor Wembanyama was limited to a series-low 20 points after shooting 4-for-15 from the floor and missing all five of his three-point attempts.
Oklahoma City failed to close out the series on the road despite the return of guard Jalen Williams, who played 10 minutes off the bench after missing the previous three games due to left hamstring strain management.
Wembanyama's Role Key for Spurs
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson discussed Wembanyama's offensive responsibilities following the Game 5 defeat, noting that the team needed more aggression from their star player.
"He's got to take more than 15 shots, even with the free throws," said Mitch Johnson, Spurs coach.
"He's going to have to score more than 20 points, for sure. ...
OKC did a good job. We've got to do a better job."
San Antonio guard Stephon Castle noted that the defensive attention drawn by Wembanyama could create scoring opportunities for the rest of the roster.
"I think they sent so many bodies towards him, it's hard at times," said Stephon Castle, Spurs guard.
"I think he just wants to make the right play and wants to win. ...
He's our best player. We need him to be aggressive.
I feel like him being aggressive opens up shots for other guys."
Thunder guard Jared McCain previously highlighted Oklahoma City's defensive strategy to contain the 7-foot-4 French star, emphasizing their collaborative adjustments.
"It's a team defence," said Jared McCain, Thunder guard. "We talked about it.
We made adjustments to it. We know that when he gets going, their whole team gets going."
The Thunder have struggled historically in Game 6 opportunities, holding an 0-3 record since 2024, including failed closeout attempts against Denver and Indiana during the 2025 postseason before winning those respective series in Game 7.
The defensive effort by Oklahoma City in Game 5 utilized multiple players, including Isaiah Hartenstein, Chet Holmgren, Jaylin Williams, and Alex Caruso, to limit Wembanyama's production before the Spurs responded in Game 6.
Williams, a one-time all-star who appeared in just 33 regular-season games this year due to multiple injuries, averaged 17.8 points in four postseason appearances before his limited minutes on Thursday, while teammate Ajay Mitchell remained out with a calf strain.
The Western Conference Finals series will now return to Oklahoma City for a do-or-die Game 7 matchup to determine which team advances to the NBA Finals.
