The Republic of Ireland secured a 1-0 victory over World Cup-bound Qatar in an international friendly at the Aviva Stadium on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
The match featured the senior international debut of 18-year-old Benfica winger Jaden Umeh.
Collins Scores Early Winner
Nathan Collins scored the only goal of the match in the fifth minute.
He headed home a cross from an inswinging free-kick delivered by Jack Moylan.
Moylan was later sent off just before half-time by referee Jamie Robinson following a tackle on Jassim Gaber, reducing Ireland to 10 men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the home side maintained their defensive organization to seal the win.
Umeh's Dream Debut
Umeh entered the match as a substitute in the 75th minute alongside fellow debutant Corrie Ndaba.
Tottenham Hotspur teenager Mason Melia made a brief cameo appearance in the final minute of normal time.
Reflecting on his immediate impact and interaction with the Dublin crowd, Umeh expressed his excitement during his post-match media duties with RTÉ Sport reporter Tony O'Donoghue.
"It was something special to be honest," said Umeh.
The young Corkman, who developed his early skills at Ringmahon Rangers before moving to Lisbon, added that the backing of the home spectators provided an incredible boost during his first moments on the pitch.
"Coming onto the pitch I was just excited. I'm still out of breath, I was giving it my all," said Umeh.
The winger explained that his performance allowed him to demonstrate his technical attributes and confidence in taking on opposition defenders.
"The first dribble I had, the whole crowd was with me. It felt something amazing.
I'm just so grateful," said Umeh.
Umeh noted that his direct style of play is a product of regular preparation and dedication to his position.
"I wanted to show the fans what I have in the locker.
It was good to pull of some of my tricks - I wouldn't say it was all of them, but it was a good moment, definitely," said Umeh.
"Taking players on, that's something I practice all the time," added the teenager.
Looking forward to the upcoming schedule, the winger noted that his immediate focus remains entirely on the national team camp rather than club progression.
"Taking it day by day at this moment," said Umeh.
Umeh expressed gratitude toward his international teammates for their welcoming attitude and support during his introduction to the senior setup.
"We'll see what the next day brings and that next day is here in the camp.
Here with the team, they were amazing today, getting the win," said Umeh.
Prior to his debut, Umeh spoke at FAI HQ on Tuesday regarding his rapid transition from Cork City to Portugal at age 16, where he manages his senior football obligations alongside his Leaving Cert studies.
"Thanks to the gaffer for giving me my debut as well. Ringmahon made me into this player.
That's where I started. I'm just grateful to them as well," said Umeh.
The winger also detailed his recent experiences training under first-team coach Jose Mourinho at Benfica, where a clip of their interaction on the training ground went viral in late April.
"Life in Portugal has been good; it's been a very good experience," said Umeh.
Umeh revealed the lighthearted nature of his conversation with the legendary manager, who routinely monitors and rewards academy prospects.
"In that clip, he was actually asking if my Portuguese was good! I was laughing, saying it's alright.
He's one of the best managers and coaches in the world, so to have him giving me advice was really, really good," said Umeh.
The modern winger outlined his core strengths on the pitch, highlighting his physical readiness, quickness, and preference for one-on-one situations.
"There are a lot of players, and everyone tries to push the person in front of them.
Moving at 16 by myself was a bit of a change, leaving home to live alone in a new country with a new language, but I just had to let my football do the talking.
It opened new doors for me," said Umeh.
Umeh emphasized that training alongside Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher, a fellow Ringmahon Rangers graduate, represents a personal milestone.
"It's definitely something we still dream about.
In two or three years' time, to have Jaden Umeh on the left and Franco Umeh on the right for Ireland, that would be something special," said Umeh.
The teenager concluded by reflecting on a long-standing childhood ambition shared with his older brother Franco, who currently plays for Portsmouth.
"Growing up, we always had Ireland jerseys with our names on the back.
I had a 'J' in front of mine and he just had 'Umeh', because he's the older brother!
It's a dream for our family, for my Mum and Dad. To see that happen would be unbelievable," said Umeh.
The national team will now travel to Montreal next week to face Canada, who share World Cup Group B with Qatar.
