A warm and muggy spell in parts of the UK and Ireland on Tuesday, September 29, gave way to fresher Atlantic air, bringing cooler temperatures, strong winds, and rain.
On Tuesday, Ireland faced strong winds and heavy rain from a deep low-pressure system nearby, causing fallen trees, blocked roads, and widespread power outages, according to ESB Networks.
Across Britain, temperatures peaked at 28.1°C at Kew Gardens, driven by a surge of warm air from Iberia.
Eastern Scotland and parts of England experienced muggy conditions with temperatures above 20°C early Wednesday morning.
The warm air mass will move over Germany midweek as a cold front advances north-south across the UK, clearing the warmth and allowing fresher southwesterly winds from the Atlantic to take hold.
High pressure will build over southern Britain, but cloud and rain will continue to approach from the west.
Midweek Shift Brings Showers and Blustery Conditions
On Wednesday, residual cloud and rain from the cold front will drift eastwards over the North Sea, clearing eastern Britain, but bands of heavy showers with hail and thunder are expected.
Temperatures in England will remain in the low 20s°C but feel cooler than Tuesday.
Northern Ireland and western Britain will experience blustery conditions with fresh winds from the south to southwest.
Wednesday night will bring gale-force winds to the Western Isles and rough seas as the low-pressure centre moves north.
Heavy showers will spread across southwest Britain, the Midlands, Cumbria, and Wales.
Most of England will remain mild, while Northern Ireland will see temperatures fall to single digits.
Thursday is forecast to be mostly dry, sunny, and cooler, with temperatures in the mid to high teens Celsius.
A scattering of showers will occur on a southwesterly to westerly breeze, making it feel fresher.
By Thursday evening, cloud and rain will increase over Northern Ireland as a new weather system approaches from the Atlantic.
This system will spread over northern Britain and Northern Ireland by Friday, while southeast Britain is expected to remain dry and sunny.
