The Texas Rangers distributed replica blood-stained Nolan Ryan jerseys to all attending fans at Globe Life Field on Friday, May 29, 2026.

The promotional event took place during the opening game of a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals.

The giveaway commemorates an iconic 1990 game where the Hall of Fame pitcher suffered a bloodied lip from a Bo Jackson comebacker but stayed on the mound.

On September 8, 1990, the then-43-year-old Ryan was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Kansas City's 27-year-old star outfielder, Bo Jackson, during the second inning at Arlington Stadium.

Despite a gushing wound that covered his number 34 jersey in scarlet smears, Ryan successfully fielded the ball to throw Jackson out at first base.

The right-handed pitcher refused medical intervention and went on to pitch seven innings, allowing only three hits in an eventual 2-1 victory.

The moment was immortalized by Fort Worth freelance photographer Linda Kaye, whose snapshot became a legendary piece of Texas sports history.

Rangers official historian John Blake noted that the unique photograph is the sole reason the dramatic moment remains deeply embedded in the public consciousness.

Rangers management explained that creating the item required an extensive development process, involving multiple vendors and seven distinct prototypes to accurately match the pattern and color of the original bloodstains.

Zach Geist, Rangers director of promotions, collaborated with Chief Business Officer Jim Cochrane to design the giveaway item.

Management initially considered a different promotional item based on Ryan's infamous 1993 altercation with Chicago White Sox third baseman Robin Ventura, but licensing issues forced a pivot.

The promotion required a leap of faith from the front office regarding how the broader public would perceive a jersey stained with fake blood.

The team eventually decided to lift their standard 10,000-item giveaway limit, making the jersey available to every fan in attendance for the game, which neared a complete sellout of over 37,000 tickets.

Geist stated that his primary responsibility involves finding innovative ways to honor Ryan's legacy inside the modern stadium for multiple generations of baseball enthusiasts.

The franchise successfully leveraged the unique promotion into a broader stadium experience, coordinating an outdoor blood drive and serving themed beverages inside the venue.

The team also encouraged fans to participate in stadium entertainment features by wearing makeup designed to mimic Ryan's facial injury.

The marketing team also revealed that they had explored interactive concepts for a figurine based on the 1993 Ventura fight, though the concept remains shelved for the time being.

The front office originally wanted to create a toy that would physically mimic the famous baseball fight, but mechanical limitations halted the project.

The promotions director remains open to revisiting the concept in future seasons if manufacturing capabilities improve.

To complement the jersey giveaway, the Rangers partnered with the Carter Blood Center to host a blood drive on the North Plaza outside Texas Live!

, while stadium vendors offered red-dyed "bloody brews" during the pregame happy hour.

The team is scheduled to follow this event with a bloody lip bobblehead giveaway on July 20, 2026, when they face the Chicago White Sox.
