Liverpool head coach Arne Slot will remain in charge for the upcoming season despite a disappointing Premier League campaign that saw the club finish fifth with 60 points on May 24, 2026.

Fenway Sports Group plans to support the Dutch manager into next season, according to reports from the Liverpool Echo and Goal.

com, even after a dramatic decline from their previous title-winning campaign.

The Reds suffered 19 defeats in all competitions, scored their lowest league total since 2015-16 with 63 goals, and conceded a Premier League era club-record 53 goals following a pre-season disrupted by the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota.

Former Players Voice Criticism

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy publicly expressed that the club should pursue Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique if the team struggles at the beginning of the upcoming season.

"If Slot doesn't start well [next season], it's [pressure] going to start again.

I don't think he's got a big say in the players [recruitment], by the way," Murphy said.

"But I think he's going to have some sort of say in the players that come in.

But if he starts badly and they're sitting in fifth, sixth after eight games, it's done," he added.

Murphy suggested that the club needs to make an aggressive financial offer to lure the Spanish manager away from France.

"I would try and break the bank and do anything I can to get Luis Enrique," he stated.

The former midfielder questioned Enrique's long-term motivation in Ligue 1 while noting his continental success.

"Well, if Luis Enrique wins the Champions League again, what more can he do?" Murphy asked.

Murphy claimed the standard of competition in France might cause the PSG coach to seek a new destination.

"He must be bored there, playing in a Mickey Mouse league where he wins every week," he said.

He noted that continental fixtures remain the primary objective for the manager in his current role. "All he's looking forward to is the Champions League.

He must want more challenges, surely?" Murphy asked.

Murphy further analyzed that Liverpool fans would favor the high-energy tactical approach utilized by the French club.

"If you watch PSG as a Liverpool fan, you're thinking, that's how I want us to play. A bit like Jurgen Klopp's team, aren't they, PSG?

And if you're one of the biggest clubs in the world, go and get the best," he explained.

He added that the negative sentiment surrounding the current management has continued to escalate across the fanbase. "I think the noise has just grown," Murphy added.

Murphy concluded that the atmosphere failed to improve even as the football season drew to a close.

"I mean, if it dissipated because they started winning some games and playing well at the end of the season, that's fair enough.

But it hasn't, it's gone the other way," he noted.

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant heavily criticized the team's performances against top opponents on social media.

"The board can not be sitting in the directors box watching this absolute garbage, and think and talk amongst themselves, and come to the conclusion that this manager will be challenging for silverware next season!!!

Hanging on to Brentford. This should be the nail in the coffin," Pennant said.

Pennant highlighted the club's poor record of securing only three victories out of 18 matches against the top nine teams.

"FSG please READ this….. Against the top 9 teams, home and away is 18 games.

Liverpool have won 3……. Yes I said 3…… just do the right thing for the club and these players!!!!

Because your eyes see and watch exactly what we ALL see. And it's horrendous," he added.

Slot's Response and Club Support

Amidst the external criticism, Slot addressed reporters regarding the squad's upcoming recruitment strategy and injury returns.

"We brought in a lot of players last season. When they're available again, that will be a change.

Every football club will sign one or two and we will do that. We need everyone available and then our results will be better," Slot replied.

A senior Liverpool club official acknowledged the difficult circumstances surrounding the campaign while maintaining that the performances fell below expectations.

"Were we dealt a difficult hand? 100 per cent.

Should we have played our hand better? Absolutely," said an anonymous senior club official.

The official emphasized that the club leadership remains fully aware of the current competitive reality. "Nobody is under any illusions.

There are mitigating factors but it hasn't been good enough," he added.

During the summer crisis, Slot had offered open communication and professional support to his players to help navigate their personal grief.

"If you can't, if it's too much, there's no pressure on anyone," he told them.

He reiterated his availability alongside the medical and psychological staff at the training complex. "My door is always open.

You've got the doc and the psychologist too. Come and talk to us," Slot stated.

Luis Enrique has the opportunity to win the Champions League final against Arsenal in Budapest on May 30, 2026, while Xabi Alonso, a previous target for Liverpool fans, has agreed to become the new head coach at Chelsea.
