Clatsop County teams faced severe disappointment on Tuesday as both the Astoria softball and Warrenton baseball squads missed securing berths in the state title games in Eugene.
Both teams suffered crucial losses primarily due to struggles with hitting when runners were in scoring position, leaving numerous base runners stranded.
Astoria Softball Falls in Extra Innings
The Astoria softball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Scappoose, a team they had already lost to three times during the regular season.
The Lady Fish opened the scoring in the second inning after Lyla Carlson reached base due to an error, followed by freshman Kilee Svensen hitting a home run over the center field fence to build a 2-0 lead.
Astoria junior pitcher Taryen Wray performed strongly early on, containing a powerful Indians lineup through the first three innings of the game.
Despite accumulating seven hits against Scappoose starter Saige Casey early in the match, Astoria failed to capitalize with runners on second and third in the third inning and left another runner stranded in the fourth.
Scappoose responded in the fifth inning by capitalizing on an Astoria fielding error to make the score 2-1, though Wray answered with an RBI hit to push Astoria's lead to 3-1.
The momentum shifted when Scappoose batter Emily Greiner hit a home run in the fifth, while relief pitching from Elly Casey successfully kept the Astoria batters under control.
In the seventh inning, Greiner struck again with a two-out, two-strike single to left field on a 3-2 count, bringing home a run to tie the game at 3-3.
The game extended into the eighth inning, where Kayla Brainerd hit a walk-off home run to center field, sealing a 5-3 victory for Scappoose and ending Astoria's reign.
Astoria actually outhit Scappoose 10-5 during the contest, with Hailey Svensen going 2-4 and her younger sister Kilee Svensen contributing a home run and a double.
Warrenton Baseball Silenced by Taft Pitching
The Warrenton baseball team experienced similar frustration during their semifinal matchup against the top-seeded Taft, falling short in a close 2-1 encounter.
The Warriors executed their initial strategy by forcing Oregon commit Zack Hankins to throw 72 pitches, drawing three walks and hitting two batters to chase the left-hander after three innings.
Despite forcing Hankins into multiple difficult situations, Warrenton failed to score against him, leaving eight baserunners stranded during his three innings on the mound.
Hankins also impacted the game offensively as Taft's leadoff hitter, launching a home run over the right field bleachers on the first pitch he saw from Aaron Neahring and driving in both runs for Taft.
Warrenton left a total of 11 base runners stranded and had two players thrown out at home plate, with one occurring in the first inning and another in the fifth.
The lone run scored by Warrenton came following a botched pickoff attempt by the Taft catcher, marking the second consecutive year the team has been eliminated in a tight postseason game.
Warrenton outhit Taft 5-3 overall, with Ryan Palmer going 2-3 with a walk, while senior Zephan Pierce concluded his high school career by going 1-2 with two walks.
Neahring took the loss despite throwing a complete six-inning game, allowing three hits, three walks, and only one earned run against the top seed.
