India and England are set to clash in the second T20 International of their five-match series at Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday, July 4, 2026.
The opening game in Chester-le-Street was abandoned due to rain after India posted 189 for 7.
India's Batting Display and Selection Dilemma
In the first match, half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer, along with a quick cameo by Shivam Dube, powered India to 189 for 7.
However, persistent rain prevented England from batting, resulting in no result.
Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is under scrutiny after scoring just one run off seven balls in the opener.
This has intensified calls to include 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 776 runs in IPL 2026.
Former BCCI selector Saba Karim defended the team management's patience with the teenager. Speaking on Star Sports' Follow the Blues, Karim said, “Sanju Samson is a fabulous player.
He has been a match-winner. He had a very good IPL season.
Before that, he was the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup. What are we looking at?
Sanju Samson would be thinking, 'Why is everyone pointing the gun at me?'”
Karim added that the competitive environment is a valuable learning experience for Sooryavanshi. “Even for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, this is a good learning curve.
He also gets to understand that to get into this Indian team XI, you have to earn your call-up.
This environment will help him grow as a player and as a human being,” Karim said.
England all-rounder Sam Curran also commented on Sooryavanshi's rise during pre-match media interactions. “I guess it's an incredible story.
I watched a lot of the IPL for a month, and I was just watching this guy, he looks so easy.
It’s truly incredible and it's rightly so, getting the attention,” Curran said.
England's Playing XI Changes
England has confirmed its playing eleven for the fixture, bringing back pacer Jofra Archer and handing a T20I debut to Josh Tongue.
Luke Wood and Saqib Mahmood have been rested.
