A video of a Chinese businessman confronting hotel staff in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, over a missing national flag has gone viral.
The incident occurred on Monday, July 6, 2026, after social media users pointed out the display only included nations qualified for the FIFA World Cup.
The tourist questioned an employee at the hotel restaurant after noticing flags from dozens of countries but failing to see China's.
According to reports from the South China Morning Post, the employee appeared visibly confused by the sudden interrogation.
“If you want to earn money from Chinese people, please fly the national flag of China,” the tourist told the employee.
Internet users quickly defended the hotel staff, explaining that the decorative display represented the 48 teams competing in the tournament in North America.
China did not qualify for the event, having last reached the tournament finals in 2002.
Public reaction to the confrontation remains heavily divided online. Many criticized the businessman for an aggressive and entitled approach toward hospitality workers.
“This kind of behaviour, treating every country like it owes China special treatment, is a big reason Chinese tourists often face resentment abroad,” one social media user wrote.
Other observers noted that the hotel decorations were specific to the sporting event rather than an international assembly.
This context explained why the host nation's own flag was also excluded from the dining area display.

Some netizens attempted to rationalize the outburst, suggesting the actions stemmed from misplaced national pride rather than malicious intent.
“He was probably just being patriotic, but he should have asked politely before accusing the hotel,” one user said.
The incident also renewed long-standing public frustration over China's international football record. The men's national team currently sits 91st in the official FIFA global rankings.
“World’s second biggest population with 1.4 billion citizens cannot even produce a football team to the World Cup.
