Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao has directed the posthumous promotion of Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards to captain, following the suspension of a multi-day search for the missing aviator in the Arabian Sea.
The promotion was ordered on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, after military forces called off the 102-hour search that covered more than 14,000 square miles.
Edwards, the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 (HSC-5), went missing when his MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter executed an emergency water landing at 3:30 a.
m. Eastern Standard Time on July 1.
Three other crew members were recovered safely by the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush.
A Career of Service
The veteran pilot logged more than 2,000 flight hours during his 20-year military career.
He previously received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
The squadron is currently deployed to the Middle East, where mental health professionals and chaplains are supporting the crew.
Officials noted that an investigation into the emergency landing is ongoing, though there is no indication of hostile action.
"The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Carrier Strike Group 10 team are with the Edwards family," said Rear Adm.
Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10.
"While we are far from home, our heartfelt support remains at your side," Cimicata continued.
"Gabe's legacy as a husband, father, friend and fearless leader will never be forgotten."
Acting Secretary Cao expressed gratitude to all personnel involved in the search operations.
"For 20 years, Commander Edwards served our nation with courage and integrity," Cao wrote.
"In recognition of his extraordinary service and sacrifice, I have directed that Commander Edwards be posthumously promoted to his selected rank of captain."
Capt. Matthew Lewis, commander of Carrier Air Wing 7, also honored the fallen aviator's legacy.
"Commander Gabe Edwards was the epitome of selfless leadership, who dedicated himself to service and sacrifice for the last 20 years," Lewis said.
Edwards is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and their two children.
"Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment," Rebecca Edwards said.
"He led with humility, integrity, and compassion, always putting his people before himself."
