The United States Navy has officially identified Commander Gabriel Edwards as the missing aviator from a helicopter mishap in the Arabian Sea, military officials announced on July 7, 2026.
Edwards was the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 (HSC-5 “Nightdippers”).
An extensive 102-hour search covering more than 14,000 square miles was suspended on Sunday after Edwards went missing during an emergency water landing.
The operation involved multi-branch assets, including two carrier strike groups, P-8A Poseidon aircraft, and multiple U. S.
Air Force aircraft.

“The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Carrier Strike Group 10 team are with the Edwards family,” said Rear Adm.
Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10.
“While we are far from home, our heartfelt support remains at your side,” Cimicata added.
“Gabe’s legacy as a husband, father, friend and fearless leader will never be forgotten,” he said.
Capt.
Matthew Lewis, commander of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7, described Edwards as “the epitome of selfless leadership” who dedicated himself to service for 20 years.
“Our deepest gratitude and sympathy go out to his family,” Lewis said.
“Gabe led his squadron with integrity and fortitude, building a cohesive organization that will continue to embody the exceptional standards he set,” he added.
Family Statement
Rebecca Edwards, the commander’s spouse, expressed gratitude to all who participated in the search.
“We are profoundly grateful to every sailor, aviator, and airman who devoted countless hours in the effort to bring Gabe home,” she said.
She highlighted his dedication to naval aviation and his primary devotion as a father and husband.
“Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment,” Rebecca Edwards said.
“He led with humility, integrity, and compassion, always putting his people before himself.”
She requested privacy as the family grieves.
“We find comfort in knowing that Gabe lived a life of extraordinary purpose,” she added.
Background and Investigation
According to Navy records, Edwards accumulated more than 2,000 flight hours across several helicopter airframes, including the SH-60F, HH-60H, and MH-60S.
His deployment assets included the aircraft carriers USS George H.W. Bush and USS Abraham Lincoln, alongside several Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers.
The military deployed mental health professionals, counselors, and chaplains to support the squadron crew on the USS George H.W.
Bush.
The cause of the emergency water landing remains under investigation, though Navy officials stated there is no indication of hostile action.
