Chesterfield Football Club has secured the permanent signing of Cyprus international forward Ruel Sotiriou, the club announced on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
The 25-year-old attacker arrives at the SMH Group Stadium following a spell with Israeli side Hapoel Jerusalem.
Sotiriou brings extensive League One experience, having made 204 appearances and scored 41 goals throughout his career.
He becomes the fifth summer acquisition for the Spireites, joining Junior Eccleston, George McEaechran, Jack Simpson, and Alfie Pond.
Career Background
Sotiriou previously spent a year-and-a-half with Bristol Rovers, where he scored six goals after the club paid a fee to acquire him.
His career began at Leyton Orient, where he scored 35 goals in 153 league games and helped the club secure a League Two title during the 2022/23 season.
He also gained experience through non-league loan stints at Chelmsford, Hampton & Richmond, and Dover Athletic.
On the international stage, Sotiriou has represented Cyprus at U19, U21, and senior levels.
Chesterfield assistant manager Danny Webb welcomed the addition, noting that the contract length remains undisclosed.
"Ruel comes into the squad at a good age and will bring both energy and experience," Webb said via the club website.
"We all know, and most importantly, he knows the quality he possesses, which he will hopefully deliver this season," he added.
Sotiriou finalized the transfer quickly after initial discussions with the management team, aided by his long-standing acquaintance with Webb.
"I'm really happy to come to a team in this division. I spoke to Webby, who I've known for quite some time.
We started talking, I came to meet the manager and everything moved quickly from there and we got the deal done," Sotiriou said.
The forward noted that prior relationships with existing squad members will accelerate his integration.
"I already know a few players here, so it's great to come into a place where you know people.
It makes settling in easier, so it should be a seamless fit," he explained.
Reflecting on his objectives for the upcoming campaign, Sotiriou expressed his desire to maintain a high standard of performance.
"I will try my best every game to be consistent. Hopefully I can score goals, get assists and help this club climb the divisions.
I share the ambition of promotion as I have won this league before, I know what it takes," he stated.
Sotiriou recalled his previous experience playing at the SMH Group Stadium as an opposing player last season and expressed enthusiasm about playing in front of the home support.
"I am excited to get out in front of a packed SMH Group Stadium.
When I came here last season, it was a tough place to visit, so I'm happy the fans will be on my side now and hopefully it goes well," he concluded.
The completion of the transfer remains subject to receiving all relevant football authority approvals.
