Three detained passengers are disputing federal accounts of a fatal shooting by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials that left a driver dead on Tuesday morning during an enforcement operation in Houston, Texas, as reported by The Guardian.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that the driver, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, used his vehicle as a weapon against officers, a claim the surviving passengers strongly deny from their current detention facility.
The department defended the action by describing the risk posed to law enforcement officers during the encounter.
"Dangerous criminals – whether they be illegal aliens or US citizens – are assaulting law enforcement and turning their vehicles into weapons to attack law enforcement," said a DHS spokesperson.
The agency further detailed their version of the physical confrontation that occurred at the scene.
"Rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense," said a DHS spokesperson.
Defense attorney Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, who represents two of the passengers, stated that his clients face intense pressure to agree to voluntary deportation orders while the shooting investigation remains active.
"Reiterated that at no point was there ever an agent standing in front of the vehicle, nor was an agent ever placed in the line of danger," said Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, Texas attorney.
The attorney expressed serious concerns regarding the potential deportation of these key witnesses before the investigation concludes.
"Given the magnitude of this case and the implications that it carries, my clients may be pressured into signing documentation for their voluntary departure," said Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, Texas attorney.
He emphasized the necessity of keeping the men within the country to ensure the factual accuracy of the ongoing inquiry.

One passenger detailed the positioning of the federal agents in a written statement reviewed by the press.
"There were no officers in front of or behind the vehicle. They were on the sides," said a passenger, Witness.
Local authorities have commenced a separate independent review of the shooting circumstances, though they noted limitations in immediate scene access.

The district attorney committed to a exhaustive search for answers regarding the fatal operational outcome.
