The Department for Work and Pensions has announced that millions of benefit claimants and state pensioners across the United Kingdom will see their payment dates moved forward in August 2026 due to upcoming summer bank holidays.
Bank holidays fall on Monday, August 3 in Scotland and Monday, August 31 in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Payments normally scheduled for those dates will be issued on the preceding working days, according to government guidance.
Scottish Pensioners Affected First
Scottish state pensioners whose National Insurance numbers end between 00 and 19—and who are normally paid on Mondays—will receive their four-weekly payout early on Friday, July 31.
Those eligible for the full new state pension following April's 4.8 percent increase will receive up to £965.20 in a single deposit.
Full basic state pension recipients will receive up to £705.80.
A similar adjustment will occur across the rest of the UK later in the month.
Claimants in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland scheduled to be paid on the August 31 bank holiday will instead receive their funds on Friday, August 28.
Widespread Impact
The revised schedule impacts approximately 24 million individuals receiving DWP-administered benefits, which includes around one in three people across the nation.
Affected payments include the state pension, Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Benefit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, and Employment and Support Allowance.
Regular payment days for the state pension are determined by the final two digits of a recipient's National Insurance number, spanning from Monday for 00 to 19 through Friday for 80 to 99.
Official Guidance
Official guidance published on the government website explains the standard disbursement procedure. Benefits are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit union account.
If your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday, you'll usually be paid on the working day before.
This may be different for Child Benefit.
The DWP confirmed that after you've claimed your State Pension, you'll get a letter about your payments.
The new State Pension is usually paid into your account every 4 weeks.
If you want to change the account, tell the Pension Service. There are different rules if you live abroad.
The DWP noted that initial payments arrive within five weeks of a selected start date, with payment days assigned based on National Insurance digits.
The day your pension is paid depends on your National Insurance number.
Because funds are released earlier than usual, official advisers encourage recipients to budget carefully to ensure the money lasts until the next scheduled payment cycle.
Claimants who do not receive expected payments on time can contact the DWP directly at 0800 328 5644, noting that operational services may be reduced during bank holidays.
