Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed reporters on July 27, 2026, following news that Mia Bieniemy, wife of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was shot Sunday evening at their home in Ashburn, Virginia.
Authorities from the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office took Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia, into custody in connection with the shooting.
Reid confirmed that Mia was hospitalized and remains in stable condition.
"Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family, our thoughts and prayers are with them," said Reid.
"I can't get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it."
Reid emphasized the positive news regarding the medical status of those involved.
"Mia is stable, which is a plus," said Reid. "So is Eric Junior, and that's all important."
The veteran head coach praised the character of Bieniemy's wife while offering emotional support during an unscheduled news conference following the team's training camp practice.
"We all love EB, and you hate seeing these kinds of things happen," said Reid. "There's always a blessing in there somewhere; I know things will work out."
Bieniemy Granted Leave
Bieniemy was granted leave from the team to remain with his family in Virginia, with no fixed timeline set for his return to Kansas City.
"On these things, real life, you take care of that, and that becomes important," said Reid.
Reflecting on his longstanding relationship with the assistant coach, Reid expressed confidence in the family's strength.
"She's a saint; we all know that, people that know her," said Reid. "One of God's good blessings… really a special person."
During Bieniemy's absence, pass-game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and run-game coordinator Andy Heck managed offensive duties, with Bleymaier taking over quarterback play-call communications during Monday's session.
"Joe Bleymaier is our pass-game coordinator, and he'll be involved there.
(Offensive line coach) [Andy] Heck is the run-game coordinator… we'll be able to keep it moving here," said Reid.
Reid reiterated that football operations remain secondary to supporting the offensive coordinator through the personal tragedy.
"The most important thing is that EB has the opportunity to spend some time there and take care of that business," said Reid.
The head coach added that the team will monitor the situation as it unfolds in the coming days.
"This is fresh, so we'll just see how things go," said Reid.
"But the fact that she's in stable condition, I think, is a positive for what it could be."
