Kenya Power fully restored electricity supply early Thursday, July 30, 2026, after a widespread blackout plunged several regions into darkness the previous night.
The national utility confirmed that power was completely restored to all affected customers by 2:00 a. m.
on Thursday, following emergency repair efforts by its technical crews through the night.
The disruption began around 8:30 p. m.
on Wednesday, causing widespread disruption to businesses, transport services, and households. Traffic lights went off across Nairobi's Central Business District.
During the outage, Kenya Power issued a statement clarifying the reach of the disruption while technical teams worked to isolate the issue.
"We wish to inform our esteemed customers that we are experiencing a widespread power outage affecting customers in Nairobi, Coast, Mt.
Kenya and parts of Central Rift. However, parts of North Rift and Western regions are on supply," said Kenya Power.
The company confirmed that emergency teams were dispatched immediately to fix the network disruption and apologized to the public for the outage.
Following the full recovery of the grid, the utility issued a follow-up statement acknowledging customer support during the power failure.
"We are pleased to report that power supply was fully restored to all affected customers by 2:00 am today," said Kenya Power.
The utility expressed appreciation for the public's patience while repair work was underway.
"We truly appreciate your patience and support as our teams worked to restore service," added Kenya Power.
Scheduled Maintenance Outages Announced
Separately, Kenya Power announced scheduled electricity maintenance outages on Thursday, July 30, affecting specific areas across Nairobi, Nyeri, Kwale, and Mombasa counties between 9:00 a.
m. and 5:00 p.
m.
The planned maintenance interruptions were announced under statutory provisions to allow network upgrades, line repairs, and customer connection work.
"Notice is hereby given under Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules that the electricity supply will be interrupted as hereunder: It is necessary to interrupt supply periodically in order to facilitate maintenance and upgrade of power lines to the network; to connect new customers or to replace power," stated KPLC.
The planned maintenance works affect specific zones including Nairobi West, parts of Kieni and Mathira in Nyeri, the Lunga Lunga border region in Kwale, and the Liwatoni port zone in Mombasa.
