Amazon Prime Video released the Gen Z-led survival thriller The Devil's Mouth on July 29, 2026.
The film features a deadly encounter between American college friends and a bull shark inside a flooded cave system in Thailand.
Directed by Jeff Wadlow, the film stars Kathryn Newton as Sara and Lana Condor as Max.
The narrative follows five vacationing friends who venture into a remote freshwater cave network with their tour guide, Wat, played by Tayme Thapthimthong.
Tensions escalate after recent monsoon storms force sea life into the freshwater caves through an oceanic wall opening.
The group becomes trapped inside narrow passages alongside an aggressive bull shark, a species capable of surviving in both salt and fresh water.
As panic spreads through the submerged caverns, long-buried emotional fractures begin to unravel the friendship between Sara and Max.
Their fight for survival transforms into a struggle over leadership and dynamic dominance.
Director Wadlow noted that the core emotional anchor is the evolving dynamic between the two lead characters rather than just the creature terror.
"I was told it's a shark movie in a cave... and I was like, well, I'm in," said Wadlow.
Wadlow emphasized that the complex friendship in the original Black List screenplay by Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner provided a unique perspective for the horror subgenre.
"But then I read the script, and there was this really nuanced, complex female friendship at its core.
That made me want to make the movie even more," he said.
The film details a series of tragic fatalities as the trapped group attempts to navigate dark cave passages.
It starts with a diver named Ryan and their tour guide Wat.
Group members Greg, Adrianne, and James fall victim to the predator and rising water levels, leaving only Sara and Max to reach an elevated exit opening above the ocean.
Wadlow explained that a pivotal exchange between the two leads before the final confrontation was added shortly before production.
"We wanted to understand that not only had Sara grown and changed, but that Max recognized it," he said.
Actress Lana Condor described her character's headstrong personality and how the life-threatening circumstances force a shift in her worldview.
"She feels that she is the leader," said Condor.
She noted that the extreme danger inside the flooded cave breaks down her character's controlling demeanor during the final acts.
"She's incredibly headstrong, disrespectful, annoying," Condor added. The actress highlighted that the ordeal brings a realization of personal limitations before the tragic climax.
"She realizes that she doesn't know everything. And she's not right about everything," she said.
The Devil's Mouth is currently streaming globally on Amazon Prime Video.
