Polish military forces scrambled F-16 fighter jets and placed air defense systems on high alert during the night of July 30, 2026, after an unidentified object entered Polish airspace from Ukraine and crashed near Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Voivodeship.
Sirens sounded across Lublin and surrounding areas at approximately 3:40 a. m.
local time as military radars tracked intensive Russian long-range aviation activity near the border, including strikes targeting Kyiv, Lviv, and Kryvyi Rih that killed at least six people.
At least a dozen flying objects operated near the Polish border, with one approaching within five kilometers before veering off, according to military officials.
Authorities sounded air raid sirens due to a verified threat of potential strikes before lifting the alert at around 3:59 a.
m.
Authorities Confirm Credible Threat
Marcin Bubicz, spokesperson for the Lublin Provincial Office, confirmed the severity of the threat during the morning alert.
“I can confirm that there was indeed an air strike hazard. This information comes directly from the Government Centre for Security.
It is credible and confirmed,” he said.
Following the siren activation, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces mobilized multiple aircraft assets to secure the eastern border region, including armed fighters and surveillance aircraft.
Lieutenant Colonel Jacek Goryszewski, spokesperson for the Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ), stated: “In the night we registered intensive combat activity of the long-range aviation of the Russian Federation.
We took all necessary measures to prevent possible violations of our airspace.
We scrambled a pair of fighters—two armed fighter jets in constant readiness—as well as an early warning aircraft and a refueling aircraft.”
The defense systems maintained continuous monitoring while tracking the targets operating near the national boundary.
“In the west of Ukraine we saw at least a dozen objects moving at a short distance from our border.
The closest came up to about five kilometers to the Polish border and then turned away,” Goryszewski added.
Despite the initial all-clear, radars detected a separate object flying westward inside Polish territory around 3:40 a.
m. , prompting an F-16 to intercept before the object vanished from radar.
“Our systems ran at full capacity all night to ensure the safety of our airspace.
We had one aircraft in the air and two fighter jets ready for action at any time,” Goryszewski said.
Crater and Debris Found Near Tarnawa-Kolonia
Investigators and emergency forces later located a crater approximately ten meters in diameter and scattered debris in a field roughly two kilometers from the nearest residential buildings in Tarnawa-Kolonia.
“Around 3:40 a. m.
we detected an object in our airspace, which is currently being examined by the relevant services.
Only after completion of this work will it be possible to say what came down in Tarnawa-Kolonia,” Goryszewski noted.
Military personnel continue to analyze the crash site to determine the precise nature of the fallen debris.
“An unambiguous identification was probably not successful because the object crashed at the exact moment the F-16 approached,” he added.
Former intelligence officer Colonel Andrzej Derlatka stated on TVP Info that the object was likely either a stray missile from the Russian barrage or a Ukrainian air defense missile attempting an interception.
Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz commended the response teams, while Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the formation of a special coordination team to monitor ongoing developments.
