A 28-year-old British climber died after falling about 60 meters near the summit of Torrecerredo in northern Spain's Cantabrian Mountains, according to the Spanish Civil Guard.
The accident happened on Thursday afternoon when the climber was roughly 20 meters from the top of the 2,650-meter mountain.
Emergency services were alerted at around 13:45 local time, or 11:45 GMT, and police and an air unit were sent to the scene.
Rescue and recovery
The Civil Guard said two mountain specialists were lowered by winch to the eastern face of the mountain to reach the fall site.
The climber's body and belongings were recovered by the mountain rescue team.
His remains were taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Asturias for forensic examination, the Civil Guard stated.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it was in contact with local authorities following reports of a British national's death in Spain.
Reports identified the climber as English but did not disclose his name, and it remains unclear whether he was accompanied by others during the climb.
The incident is the latest fatality in the region after several deaths of British hikers in northern Spain earlier this year.
Those included a 42-year-old woman who fell from Balaitús Peak in the Pyrenees and a 61-year-old man found exhausted in the same mountain range.
Sepa Asturias, which handles emergency services in the area, also reported transporting a 54-year-old French woman to hospital after she suffered a leg injury in the Cantabrian Mountains the same day.
