Republican-aligned groups are set to deploy $166 million in television advertising across Texas from September through Election Day to support Attorney General Ken Paxton in his US Senate contest against Democrat James Talarico.
A CNN analysis of ad tracking data reveals that GOP organizations are mounting a massive financial push, outspending Democratic groups by more than 5-to-1 in the state during the final two months of the campaign.
The heavy investment in Texas exceeds Republican advertising commitments in key battleground states, including combined totals for Michigan and Maine, raising total expected GOP expenditures in the Lone Star State past $300 million.
The national political environment and presidential approval ratings sitting at 33 percent have forced party strategists to defend traditionally secure seats, creating concern among party members following Paxton's contested primary victory over incumbent Sen.
John Cornyn.
Texas Republican Representative Michael McCaul highlighted the critical nature of the financial intervention to preserve the party's Senate majority.
"I think we are looking at the numbers going down. The top of the ticket is not helpful for down-ballot candidates," said McCaul, Representative, Texas Republican.
McCaul stressed that national assistance had become essential for the state campaign.
"Now we have a nominee that could – potentially – we could lose the seat over.
So I think there is a bit of a dire warning now coming out of the state that we need help to keep that seat Republican," said McCaul, Representative, Texas Republican.
Veteran strategist Karl Rove offered a critical assessment of the expenditure during an appearance at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.
"No, but they’re going to have to do it, and that’s just the start," said Rove, Republican Strategist.
Rove noted that the current primary outcomes altered the financial requirements for the party.
"That’s enough through the end of September. If John Cornyn were the nominee, this race would be over," said Rove, Republican Strategist.
Leadership from the main Republican super PAC defended the heavy financial allocation to the race.
"affirms our commitment to maintaining the Republican majority and defeating Far-Left liberals like James Talarico," said Alex Latcham, Executive Director of the Senate Leadership Fund.
GOP media buys include over 1,300 commercials during college football broadcasts and 750 spots during airings of "Judge Judy" in September alone, alongside advertising during morning network news and game shows.
Democratic organizations have begun responding to the blitz, with the Senate Majority PAC launching digital and streaming campaigns targeting Paxton as the race enters its final weeks.
