Barnhart's retirement comes amid a rapidly changing collegiate sports environment.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey noted the increased complexity of the role, with larger budgets, more personnel, and greater emphasis on capital expenditures.

Coaches Weigh In on Next AD

Kentucky women's basketball coach Kenny Brooks expressed a desire for a strong advocate for his program.

He praised Barnhart's 24-year tenure and hopes the next AD can maintain the department's success across multiple sports.

Football coach Will Stein emphasized the importance of a servant leader who knows everyone's name and cares about athlete well-being.

He also highlighted the need for someone adept at generating revenue.

Men's basketball coach Mark Pope called replacing Barnhart "impossible," noting the respect Barnhart commands among SEC colleagues.

Challenges and Search Process

Barnhart's tenure was not without controversy.

He was named in Title IX lawsuits and faced criticism over a post-retirement executive-in-residence role that he ultimately declined after public backlash.

UK president Eli Capiluto is leading the search with help from DSG Global. The university is considering candidates from college athletics, pro sports, and business.

The new AD will also serve as CEO of Champions Blue, LLC, a structure designed to provide flexibility in navigating college sports changes.
