Indiana University head football coach Curt Cignetti has announced his intention to remain with the Hoosiers until retirement, while expressing serious concerns about the escalating costs in college football recruiting.

During a Big Ten Network interview broadcast on June 5, 2026, Cignetti credited university President Pamela Whitten and Athletic Director Scott Dolson for the program's historic national championship success.

Cignetti guided Indiana to a perfect 16-0 season, securing the program's first national title since 1894. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza became the top overall selection in the recent draft.

Following that success, Cignetti signed an eight-year contract extension through 2033, valued at an estimated $13.2 million annually.

Alignment with Leadership

The head coach attributes the rapid transformation of the football program to the absolute alignment and financial commitment from Whitten and Dolson.

"No question. It's No. 1.

It's the only reason I'm here because I had that feeling about both of them," said Cignetti.

The collaborative framework between administration and football operations relies on distinct boundaries and complete transparency. Cignetti controls football decisions while Whitten and Dolson manage executive and financial matters.

"We are totally aligned 100 percent," said Cignetti.

The contract reflects this relationship, as Cignetti's buyout decreases to 50 percent should Whitten or Dolson leave their administrative roles before his departure.

"I'm here and will be here till I decide to hang it up because of those two people," said Cignetti.

Earlier, Cignetti used humor to address speculation about his future following the national championship victory in January.
