He now holds world titles in three weight classes, having previously won belts at super-flyweight and flyweight.

Rodriguez dropped Vargas with a short overhand left in the fourth round.

He finished the fight with a straight left hand at the end of a four-punch combination in the sixth.

Vargas fell to 19-2-1.

He landed 81 of 279 punches (29%), while Rodriguez connected on 81 of 213 (38%), according to ESPN.

"I'm ready for whoever, whenever," Rodriguez said. "Put them in front of me, and I'm going to say yes."

The victory opens potential matchups against WBO champion Christian Medina or a move to super-bantamweight to face undisputed champion Naoya Inoue.

"He was tougher than I thought," Rodriguez said of Vargas. "He had good pop in his punches.

... He was a lot stronger than I thought.

And even after that first knockdown, he got up and he was fighting like it never even happened.

Respect to him."

Promoter Eddie Hearn expressed confidence in Rodriguez.

"After Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury, 'Bam' vs. Inoue is the biggest fight in the sport, no doubt," Hearn said.

"If the right offer and the opportunity comes, 'Bam' will be there. And trust me when I say he ain't getting beat."
